Diversity lights up Stockland Merylands

On Thursday 21 March, Stockland Merrylands together with community partners celebrated Harmony Day.

Harmony Day is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home, from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world. By participating in Harmony Day activities, we can learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds equally belong to this nation and enrich it.

Local shoppers gathered for performances from Western Sydney schools and the local Youth Centre to mark the occasion. The event was organized by Stockland employee Priskilla John, a recent graduate of Stockland’s Multicultural Scholarship program. Performances included:

  • Flag Dancing and Bollywood Dancing performed by students from Hilltop Road Public School,
  • Tongan Performance Group performed by students from Merrylands High School,
  • Oz Afrique African dancing and drumming group performed by students from Cabramatta High School, and
  • Four singing and dancing youth performances by local students from Holroyd Council Youth Centre.

Daniel Buchanan, Center Manager says “Stockland Merrylands is at the heart of our local community. Celebrating cultural diversity is especially significant for us as we are in one of Australia’s most culturally diverse areas, and our Centre is a source of pride and a meeting place for this community. By celebrating our diversity we are celebrating the community who support and patronize our Centre – their Centre .”

Eliza Hodgson, Marketing Manager says “Harmony Day is a perfect time to celebrate and reflect on the rich tapestry of cultures which make Merrylands such a fantastic place to live, work and play.”
